Plot summary
Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins drove from California to Patagonia in 1968, aiming to climb Fitz Roy in the Andes. Jeff Johnson finds footage of that expedition and resolves to follow the same path, with the Corcovado volcano as his goal. He speaks with Chouinard and Tompkins, then plans his own journey. Rather than going overland, he travels by water, signing on with a small boat that leaves Mexico and works down the Chilean coast, bringing surfing, sailing and climbing into the trip. The film opens with the home movie footage Chouinard and Tompkins shot on their own voyage decades earlier, then follows Johnson's own record of his.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The film's subtitle comes from Lionel Terray's mountaineering autobiography Les Conquérants de l'inutile, or Conquistadors of the Useless, published in 1961. Terray was the first person to summit Fitz Roy, in 1952, and his book was influential with Chouinard and Tompkins.
- Mercer was invited down to Chile while the film was being shot, because the makers thought he might be able to write some music for it. He worked with Isaac Brock, and after coming back they watched footage, got inspired and put some music together.
