Plot summary
English football arrives at Italia '90 with its reputation in ruins. Hooliganism has brought the game into disrepute at home, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher backs a proposal to keep England out of the tournament, and Sports Minister Colin Moynihan urges Italian police to be firm with the team's supporters. Manager Bobby Robson works under intense scrutiny from the press, and his squad is dismissed as donkeys. Over six weeks in Italy the players have the chance to change how the country sees them and the game. The account is assembled from archive footage of the period, intercut with reconstructions, and carries no modern interviews.
