I Am What I Am (2021) on Netflix

Plot summary

Gyun is a timid 18-year-old who lives with his grandfather in a remote village while his parents work construction in Guangzhou. At a Lunar New Year festival, dancers in a black lion steal his red envelope, but a lone red lion dancer wins it back. That dancer is a girl whose name is also Gyun, a former lion dancing champion. She gives him her lion head and urges him to pursue the sport, saying a cotton tree flower that fell on him marks him as destined to be a hero. Gyun decides to compete in Guangzhou. He recruits his friends Mao and Gou, and an elderly man points them to Qiang, an alcoholic salted fish seller and once a lion dancer. They pester him on his delivery rounds until he agrees to coach them.
