Plot summary
On Christmas Eve in 1938, Madge Arwell comes across an injured Spaceman Angel and helps him while cycling home; he promises to repay her kindness if she makes a wish. Three years later she flees wartime London with her children, Lily and Cyril, for a house in Dorset, after a telegram tells her that her husband Reg is missing over the English Channel. She keeps the news to herself so the children can have a Christmas. The house's caretaker is the Doctor, who shows them around. That night, Cyril opens a big glowing present under the Christmas tree, which holds a portal to a snow-covered forest, and steps through. The Doctor and Lily go after him. Madge finds her children gone and follows.

- Filming of the Christmas special was disrupted on 30 September 2011 by a 24-hour protest at BBC Wales over compulsory redundancies, after production had begun in September and was due to finish by mid October.
- Matt Smith, who played the Doctor, called the shoot "really tough": night filming in a forest with children involved meant schedules changed radically and the crew sometimes worked through with no breaks, eating lunch at midnight.
- Nine-year-old Maurice Cole, who played Cyril Arwell, was described by Doctor Who Magazine as the youngest companion in the history of the Doctor Who franchise.
- The characters Ven-Garr and Billis were named after outgoing executive producers Piers Wenger and Beth Willis, both of whom had served on the show alongside writer Steven Moffat.
- The opening sequence in the corridors of a spaceship was filmed at Uskmouth Power Station, where the noise was so bad that the crew had to wear ear protectors.
