Plot summary
Marinette Dupain-Cheng is a clumsy, socially awkward teenager in Paris who would rather go unnoticed at school, where she has befriended Alya Césaire and dodges the rich, bratty Chloé Bourgeois. Fleeing her, she bumps into Adrien Agreste and starts to crush on him. Adrien has grown distant since the recent death of his mother, Emilie, and his father, the fashion designer Gabriel Agreste, is grieving too: he uses the Butterfly Miraculous to become Hawk Moth and stirs up chaos in the city, hunting the Ladybug and Black Cat jewels because their combined power is stronger than death and could bring his wife back. Wang Fu, guardian of the Miracle Box, releases them, and after Marinette saves him from a bus, the Ladybug Miraculous lands in her bag. Tikki, the Kwami of Creation, explains what she must do.
