Plot summary
Eleven-year-old Leo is being treated for cancer in a New York hospital, where he reads bedtime stories to his younger sister, Lily. The illness has given him a secret: he can send his spirit out of his sleeping body, invisible and able to pass through walls, though he fades if he stays away too long. Across the city, Lieutenant Alex Tanner is demoted to grunt work after a burglary arrest goes wrong. A disfigured man blackmails the mayor with a computer virus that he says will wreck the city's infrastructure within a day, and the newspapers call him The Face. Tanner tries to arrest him at the docks and is outsmarted and injured. In the hospital, Leo's phantom guides Tanner's back into his body, and when Tanner wakes he remembers what everyone else forgets.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Phantom Boy (2015)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Leo, the Phantom Boy, was inspired by fallible Marvel superheroes created by Stan Lee in the 1960s, including Spider-Man and the Hulk.
- The directors opted for hand-drawn animation on paper, with computer work only at a later stage, to showcase the artists' touch.
- The film's New York was designed from photos of modern-day New York, with buildings relocated or angles changed; sets were drawn in wax chalk on paper, then refined on a computer without erasing pencil and chalk strokes.
