Plot summary
Thirty scientists leave Earth for Arkanar, a planet of humans whose culture sits centuries behind. There a Renaissance movement was crushed, and anyone counted an intellectual is put to death, so the society stays locked in its Middle Ages. Anton is one of the visitors. He takes the identity of Don Rumata, a nobleman in a castle, and shares his home with Ari, a young woman he has taken as his bride, and with the juvenile prince of the kingdom. Orders forbid him to meddle in local politics or to push the locals ahead by force. Don Reba, the prime minister, rules through his militia, the Greys, who murder scholars, and Rumata sets himself the task of finding Budakh, a doctor Reba's men have seized.
