Plot summary
In Appalachia's mining country, longtime miners who are friends and family to one another go down for what should be an ordinary day's work. Ryan, eighteen, joins them: he is the son of one of the veterans and the godson of the section leader, Zeke. Safety at the mine has been a growing worry, and Zeke is caught between protecting his crew and the steady wage a depressed region depends on. Then a methane explosion tears through the mine, and the tunnels fill with smoke. The men's only air comes from faulty self-rescuers, tanks that carry roughly an hour of oxygen, two miles beneath the surface.
