Sebastian 'Basti' Lämmle has no wish to serve in the Bundeswehr, so he writes the refusal that should keep him out. A friend of his, who has his eye on Basti's girlfriend, never posts it, and the call-up arrives anyway. At basic training Basti acts the fool, and he is placed in a room with the unit's least promising soldiers. A local American squad is the rival the unit must face in a contest.

- The soundtrack reworks well-known German songs as parodies: Extrabreit's "Hurra, hurra, die Schule brennt" is reinterpreted by Maggers United as "Hurra, hurra, die Stube brennt", and Michael Holm's "Tränen lügen nicht" is performed by several cast members as a parody.
- The film's military gear was partly equipment the real Bundeswehr had stopped using years earlier: both the Germans and the Americans in the exercise carry Vietnam-War-era M16A1 rifles, while the Bundeswehr at the time used the G3 and already the G36.
