Plot summary
Helios World in Chester County, Pennsylvania runs a system, designed by former employee Stephen Winters, that turns solar flares into electricity. Winters spots a fault that lets magnetic energy escape and calls chief executive Jonathan Kane, who ignores the warning. A test sends a magnetic beam to the company's power station and stores the energy; a magnetic field briefly sets off car alarms nearby. Michael Edwards, a scientist on the team, finds part of the harvested energy missing and asks that more testing be done before the program is repeated at the French branch. His son Nick, a student, is curious about the loss. Allysa Winters, Stephen's wife, telephones Helios to warn the company of danger. Miles away, a vortex that draws metal to itself grows and damages property, and Sheriff Joe Riley calls Michael about it.
