Plot summary
Charles "Boomer" Baxter is setting mountain-top removal explosives in West Virginia when the detonations trigger an earthquake that devastates the area. Government seismologist Dr. Amy Lane reaches the epicenter hours later and finds that the quake has opened a fault through the center of North America, running to the San Andreas Fault. Further instability along it would mean huge earthquakes and tsunamis across the Pacific, with Los Angeles and San Francisco among the cities in danger. Boomer and Dr. Lane follow the widening crack as it moves across the continent, working out how to stop the next quake before the fault tears the country apart.
