Plot summary
In 1930s Marshalltown, Nova Scotia, Maud Dowley lives with her brother Charles and their Aunt Ida, who berates her for visiting the local nightclub. Maud has severe arthritis, and Charles has sold the family house their parents left to him. At a store she sees Everett Lewis, a rough and inarticulate fish peddler, put up an advertisement for a cleaning lady, and she takes the job in exchange for room and board. The two share his very small house and a bed, which sets the town gossiping. While cleaning, Maud paints a shelf, then decorates the walls with flowers and birds. Sandra, one of Everett's customers from New York City, is intrigued by the paintings, buys decorated cards and later commissions a larger piece.

- Sean Bean was cast as Everett Lewis but left Maudie over other commitments, and Ethan Hawke replaced him, taking the part because he is fond of Atlantic Canada and owns property in Guysborough, Nova Scotia.
- Director Aisling Walsh had Maud Lewis's famously tiny 10-foot house replicated accurately for the film, but the replica had to be enlarged to fit a film crew. Walsh painted some of the flowers on its walls herself, and the crew spent weeks gathering houseflies for an infestation scene.
- Producer Mary Sexton said attempts at a Maud Lewis biographical film had gone on for 10 years, and director Aisling Walsh committed to the project after reading only about 30 pages of Sherry White's screenplay.
- The film's release helped drive up prices for Maud Lewis's paintings: in Ontario a charity auction sold a Lewis work for $45,000, beating the previous top price of $22,000 paid in 2009, while another painting estimated at $16,000 sold for more than double.
