Plot summary

Mary Godwin is the daughter of the feminist writer Mary Wollstonecraft and the publisher William Godwin; her mother died shortly after giving birth to her. Sixteen years later she shares a house with her father, her stepmother and her stepsister Claire Clairmont, and her stepmother wants her out of it. William sends Mary to a friend in Scotland, where she meets Percy Bysshe Shelley, a poet who is already married. Claire pretends to be dying to bring Mary home, and William takes Shelley on as a pupil. Shelley's wife asks Mary in the street to keep away from her husband; Mary says he is only her father's pupil, and Shelley tells her he loves only her and supports his wife and child with money. Mary and Shelley elope, taking Claire along.
