Plot summary
At the beginning of the twentieth century, Lili d'Alengy is a celebrated Parisian courtesan who has always presented her disabled daughter Tina as her niece. After her mother's death she has to raise the girl herself, and to protect her reputation she flees Paris for Rome. There Maria Montessori works with her partner Giuseppe Montesano at an institute for children with learning difficulties, and she is developing a teaching method of her own. Lili would rather simply leave Tina in their care, but only one place is free, so she stays in the city. Lili wants to be seen in Paris as a modern, emancipated woman and looks for lovers in Rome, while Maria must win over conservative doctors to fund her approach.
