Plot summary
A man is found strangled in his bed, and his wife Helena Wynsfield is accused. Detective McCarthy brings in criminal psychologist Kate Fuller to evaluate her. Helena's eight-year-old daughter Sophie was in the house that night and is the only witness; both mother and daughter insist that a sleep demon named Mara killed him. Kate signs Helena into a mental institution. Then Kate finds a man named Takahashi dead in the same manner, and McCarthy dismisses the Mara legend. From the institution Helena speaks of Dougie, a man from a sleep paralysis support group, and shows a red mark in her left eye. At the group, run by Dr. Ellis, Dougie tells Kate that Mara is real and that she has chosen another man, Saul.
