Jeff Richards
Biography
Jeff Richards was an American actor who began in small, often uncredited film parts before Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer signed him and changed his name. Born Richard Mansfield Taylor in Portland, Oregon, he first played baseball and then moved to Hollywood, where he appeared in uncredited bits in The Big Punch, Johnny Belinda, Fighter Squadron and The Girl from Jones Beach. At MGM he had a credited role in Angels in the Outfield (1951). He gained notice as Benjamin Pontipee in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954), a hit that established him as a film name. The role brought him a shared Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer, an honor he split with George Nader and Joe Adams. He went on to roles in Many Rivers to Cross (1955), The Opposite Sex (1956) and Island of Lost Women (1959), and took the title role in the television western Jefferson Drum. His later film work included The Secret of the Purple Reef and Waco.
