Plot summary
Harbour has spent his life looking after his brother Wilbur, who is suicidal. In their thirties the brothers inherit their father's secondhand bookshop in Glasgow, and when Wilbur leaves the hospital after another attempt on his own life, the staff ask Harbour to take him in. Wilbur has no interest in the family business and works at a nursery, while Harbour runs the shop. Alice, who cleans at the hospital, brings Harbour the books the patients leave behind; her young daughter Mary would rather the books stayed in the shop than be sold. Mary captures Wilbur's heart, and Harbour falls for Alice.
