Plot summary
Creasy, a former CIA agent who now works as a mercenary, has been broken down by the deaths and horrors he witnessed in Vietnam, South America and Lebanon. Italy's rich families live with the threat of kidnapping and often hire bodyguards, and one household takes him on to watch over Samantha, a girl of twelve. Guarding a child appeals to him not at all; he accepts because nothing better is offered. Samantha asks him endless questions about himself and his life. It wears at him at first, and then her persistence works through his hard shell and he begins to talk. The two become friends, and when her parents are away he stands in for them, giving advice and helping with her track training.

- Producer Arnon Milchan wanted Sergio Leone to direct Robert De Niro in the lead, while Tony Scott, then slated to direct, wanted either Marlon Brando or Robert Duvall as his leading man.
- English composer John Scott scored the film, and a cue from it titled "We've Got Each Other" was later incorporated into the score of Die Hard, playing as John McClane and Holly Gennaro exit the Nakatomi Building.
- Novelist A. J. Quinnell said the film was so bad it became a cult movie in a European country, and that director Élie Chouraqui had never read his book, so when Quinnell traveled to Paris to see the finished film he could not recognize anything he had written.
