Plot summary
Nicole Walker is sixteen and lives in a Seattle suburb with her father, Steve, her stepmother, Laura, and her stepbrother, Toby. She goes to a café with Margo Masse, her best friend, and with Gary Rohmer, a friend of theirs, and there she meets David McCall, who is older than she is. He charms her and the two begin dating, but Steve dislikes him, and David grows possessive of her.

- Leonardo DiCaprio was looked at for the role of David McCall, surnamed McNeil before production, but did not think he was right for the part; instead he put in a good word for Mark Wahlberg, his co-star on The Basketball Diaries, to director James Foley.
- Reese Witherspoon said she requested a stunt double for the sex scene during the roller coaster sequence: it was not explicit in the script, the director thought of it on his own and asked her on set, she said no, and it was not a particularly great experience.
- Producer Brian Grazer came up with the idea for the film while on a skiing trip with his daughter, and in 1993 Christopher Crowe was hired to pen the script, initially under the title No Fear for Imagine Entertainment.
- The movie was filmed for 11 weeks in the Pacific Northwest: although the story is set in Seattle, the filmmakers spent only three days there to establish the city before moving production to Vancouver, where they found the site for the Walker family house on Howe Sound.
- It has since become a cult film, and it launched teen idol status for its two young leads, Wahlberg and Witherspoon, who were romantically linked at the time of the movie's premiere.
