Plot summary
A weekly scandal sheet pays for Michael Trevor's life in Paris, where he passes as a worldly novelist. The expatriates he threatens pay him to keep their names out of it. He is really Jimmy Powers, a former newspaper man who left the United States after taking the blame for a scam. From the wealthy Harold Taylor he extracts two thousand dollars. Harold's niece, Mary Kendall, arrives in the city and she and Michael are drawn to each other at once, though Mary has a boyfriend, Frank Reynolds, toward whom she feels no great passion. Michael's partners are Irene Harper, a former flame of his, and Fred. To keep her brother from going to prison, Irene proposes drawing Mary into a scandal, and Michael, who makes a rule of never targeting women, gives in.
