Plot summary
In Chinese folklore a nu gui haunts the men who wronged it in a past life. Zheng Wei leaves his home in China and takes refuge in Brisbane, hunting for a former Shinto associate he hopes can help him. Malice follows him there, and the ritual he attempts fails, leaving his letter cursed. A few nights later, an American student named Joe is out to dinner with a quiet young woman who examines a crumpled letter he picked up on the street. She identifies the writing as Mandarin but keeps the contents to herself, then slips away while he is talking with the waiter. Back at the house, Joe finds Lee with Sai, the woman from dinner. Joe keeps to his room while Lee grows obsessed with Sai, and a mysterious woman stalks their friend Keo.
