Plot summary
An eruption at the Trollsvotin volcano in Iceland kills a survey team from the USGS. Volcanologist Dr. Peter Shepherd takes four graduate students to Grímsvötn, and that dormant volcano erupts too; the group escapes by helicopter. Brianna Chapman notices pyroclastic surges, heavy ash and unusually runny lava. Shepherd visits Dr. Oscar Vallian, who has quit the USGS and has a theory called Exodus: all of Earth's volcanoes could erupt within a short time. Vallian travels to Honshu in Japan ahead of Mount Fuji's expected eruption. In Washington, Dr. William Kincaid, head of the USGS, is asked to review Shepherd's data. Shepherd tells his students the government will not act without proof. His estranged wife Natalie, a park ranger, is told at Yellowstone that Old Faithful has not done anything for a day.
