Plot summary
Goemon Ishikawa XIII is to marry Murasaki Suminawa, the daughter of a samurai clan's leader, but the ceremony is interrupted. Fuma Clan ninja storm the wedding to seize an antique urn, the Suminawa family heirloom, just handed to Goemon. Lupin III, Daisuke Jigen and Fujiko Mine fight the attackers off, and in the confusion a second group of ninja kidnaps Murasaki and leaves a ransom note offering her in trade for the urn. Inspector Koichi Zenigata, retired at a Buddhist temple, sees no point in a world without Lupin, but a photograph from the wedding brings him back to the hunt. Clan Elder Suminawa, Murasaki's grandfather, tells Goemon that the family treasure's whereabouts are hidden in the urn, which the Fuma have tried to steal for centuries, and refuses to trade it. Lupin steals it himself.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Lupin the Third: The Fuma Conspiracy (1987)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Budget concerns led TMS to replace the regular Lupin III voice cast with a cheaper Aoni Production line-up. Voice actor Yasuo Yamada, never told who was responsible, believed creator Monkey Punch had lobbied against him; Monkey Punch had actually been happy with him, and the regulars returned for the TV special Bye-Bye Liberty - Close Call!.
- It was the first Lupin III animation since the 1969 Pilot Film not to feature Yasuo Yamada as Lupin, and the only one not to feature Kiyoshi Kobayashi as Jigen until the 2021 TV series Lupin III Part 6.
- Lupin's cars were modelled on cars owned by two Telecom Animation Film staffers: Hayao Miyazaki's Citroen 2CV and supervisor Yasuo Ōtsuka's Fiat 500. Using their own vehicles as models kept the animation consistent throughout production.
- AnimEigo's 1994 US release was retitled Rupan III: The Fuma Conspiracy because licensor Toho feared the estate of Arsene Lupin creator Maurice Leblanc would sue for the unauthorised use of the name.
- The same budget constraints that replaced the voice cast also replaced the series' usual composer, Yuji Ohno, with Kiyoshi Miyaura.
- Because the story is set in Japan, the staff could easily research locations and props; the treasure cave mountain is based on a real Gifu Prefecture site, Mt Shakujo, and the police chase uses a local spa's rotemburo, an outdoor soaking pool.
