Plot summary
Arvores National Park has been losing people, rangers and hikers alike, and the ranger who held Lennon's new post is among the missing. Lennon, a backcountry ranger, keeps a record of them in her cabin. On a hike she loses her way and hears distorted voices through her handheld transceiver even with the batteries out; Jackson, a fellow ranger, finds her. A hiker named Sarah Greenberg then fails to return. Zhang, the head ranger, coordinates a search party, and Jackson tells Lennon to remain at base camp should Sarah come back. Lennon remembers her younger sister Jenny, who disappeared in the woods during their childhood, and disobeys.
