Plot summary
Maya is twenty-six and works as a nurse in Boston, and she and her single mother do not speak. She buys an antique drawer from Charlie, and the two become a couple. Once they are dating she brings him around Jason, her closest friend from college, a good-natured man who is unreliable and often in their company. After a year, Charlie takes Maya to Cape Cod to meet his family, and she becomes close to his mother, Ruth. A monsoon falls on Charlie's thirtieth birthday, and the two of them marry at their house in a small ceremony. When COVID-19 reaches the United States, long shifts and shortages at the hospital leave Maya exhausted.
