Plot summary
Marc teaches literature at the University of Lausanne and lives with his sister Marianne in the large isolated chalet the two inherited when they were young. He is a bachelor with a reputation for affairs with his female students. At the end of winter, one of his most brilliant students, Barbara, disappears, and the police open an inquiry. Two days later Marc meets Anna, who is trying to find out what happened to the young woman, and he admits that Barbara spent the evening before her disappearance with him. A student named Annie pursues him, while Marianne is courted by his head of department, Richard.
