Plot summary
Kat Patton and Sam Reed grow up in a small Illinois town. Their fathers, Bobby Reed and Tom Patton, run a custom furniture business there, and the year the two children turn four, the men build them a small table for the Christmas Eve dinner that family friend Elissa Beth Dixon hosts at her house each year. Sam leaves town at eighteen for school and settles in New York City as a journalist, returning most Christmases, while Kat stays and takes a job in the family business. The two see each other about once a year at that dinner, each watching the other go through romances with other people. After five years away following a falling out with Kat, Sam comes back to the party intending to speak up at last.
