Plot summary
In 1881 at Old College, Oxford, three very different scholars live close together. Abercrombie Smith is a model of Victorian health and clear thinking, while Monkhouse Lee is an unworldly and delicate student from Thailand. Edward Bellingham occupies the rooms between them, and his strange and exotic manner and his studies of ancient Egyptian secrets attract much attention in the college. At the center of his work is a mysterious mummy called Lot No. 249. A key question is whether Bellingham's experiments could really bring the ancient remains to life.
