Plot summary
In Paris in 1789, after the storming of the Bastille, the working people of the city are caught up in the early years of the Revolution. Françoise, a young washerwoman, and Basile, a man with neither family nor name, discover love and revolution alongside their friends, and they dream of emancipation. Their meeting place with the historical figures of the time is the newly founded Assemblée Nationale, where Robespierre, Marat, Desmoulins and Danton are among those who meet, and where a new political system takes shape. The debates there and the riots in the streets decide the fate of Louis XVI and the birth of the republic.
