Plot summary
In 1721, after years of war, the regent of France, Philippe d'Orléans, seeks peace with Spain through marriage. He proposes that the eleven-year-old Louis XV take as his wife Maria Anna Victoria, the four-year-old Spanish Infanta, and that his own daughter Louise Elisabeth, twelve, marry Don Luis, the Prince of Asturias. Madrid accepts both matches, and the two girls are to be handed over with ceremony on an island in the river dividing the countries. Louise Elisabeth's grandmother warns her she will never see France again, and that a princess lives to keep a dynasty going. At Versailles, Louis XV asks an adviser whether anyone means to kill him.
