Plot summary
Paul Tannek leaves a small Midwest town for New York University on a scholarship. His father advised him to win friends by being courteous and taking an interest in people, but his roommates Chris, Adam and Noah decide his manners, his working-class background and his studying make him a loser. They give the housing administration a false account of him, and he loses his dorm room, with the university placing him in a veterinary hospital. He is drawn to a classmate, Dora Diamond, who covers her tuition with a waitressing job at a strip club until she is fired, and who is the lover of their English professor, Edward Alcott. She asks Alcott to let her live with him and cut her commute, and he says no.
