Plot summary
In her last year at St Martha's, a Catholic girls school in Sydney, Josie Alibrandi is a scholarship student and vice-captain among classmates from Anglo-Australian families with money. She lives in Glebe with her mother, Christina, and argues often with her nonna, Katia. Her best friends, Sera and Anna, are at St Martha's with her; John Barton, the son of a politician, attends the brother school and Josie keeps her feelings for him to herself. At an inter-school debate she meets Jacob Coote, a public school student, and the two clash. Christina had Josie at seventeen without marrying and never told Michael Andretti, who left to study law in Adelaide. He comes to Sydney for work and learns he has a daughter.
