Plot summary
Fred Flarsky works as a journalist in New York City, and he quits the day his paper is bought by Parker Wembley, a media mogul whose politics he opposes. His best friend Lance takes him to a charity event, where Charlotte Field, the Secretary of State, also turns up. She and Fred recognize each other: she was his babysitter when they were teenagers. Charlotte has persuaded President Chambers, who wants to leave politics for films, to endorse her run for the presidency. She reads Fred's columns and hires him as her speechwriter over the objections of her chief of staff, Maggie. On the campaign trip that follows, Fred advises Charlotte on sounding more relatable to voters.
