Plot summary
In October 2008, Colleen, a young nun in training, has gone out of her way to avoid her family. Her mother's email announces that her brother Jacob is home from the war in Iraq, and Colleen sets her studies aside to return to the house in Asheville, North Carolina where she grew up. Her old bedroom is just as she left it, the walls still black and the goth and heavy metal posters still hanging. Joani and Bill Lunsford, her parents, are happy to see her, though the visit is full of unease and awkwardness, and Jacob keeps to himself in the guesthouse.

- Director Zach Clark took the names of the Lunsford family from his own relatives, Colleen, Jacob, Bill and Joani, and the surname Lunsford from producer Melodie Sisk's stepfather, blending their two family histories into the film.
- To sell the film's 2008 setting, costume designer David Withrow was strict about what was in fashion that year, props and products were double-checked, and the TV news reports the characters watch were near-verbatim recreations of Asheville, North Carolina local news of the era.
