Plot summary
On the planet Turo, Dr. Jumba Jookiba is convicted of illegal genetic experimentation for creating Experiment 626, an aggressive, nearly indestructible creature. 626 escapes in a stolen police cruiser and crashes on Kauai. The Grand Councilwoman offers Jumba his freedom if he recaptures the creature, pairing him with Earth expert Agent Pleakley. On the island, Lilo Pelekai is expelled from hula school after pushing a classmate. Her older sister Nani is her guardian, and social worker Mrs. Kekoa gives her three days to meet the household's requirements. When their neighbor Tūtū takes Lilo to an animal shelter, the girl picks out a strange dog and names him Stitch, while Jumba and Pleakley close in on him.

- A fire broke out in a trailer at the film's Haleiwa base camp on April 16, 2023, destroying costumes meant for the first three weeks of filming and causing about $200,000 in damage; the start of filming was delayed indefinitely.
- ILM had Legacy Effects build animatronic puppets of Stitch, including one for underwater scenes, so the cast would have a physical scene partner; the puppets never appear on screen in the finished film.
- The casting of Sydney Elizebeth Agudong as Nani and Kahiau Machado as David drew accusations of colorism and whitewashing, since both actors are lighter-skinned than the original animated characters; Agudong was attacked in Instagram comments for taking the role.
- After Internet users found that Kahiau Machado had used a racial slur on Spotify and Instagram, Disney recast the role of David Kawena with Kaipo Dudoit; Machado apologized for the slur on April 27, 2023.
