Plot summary
In 1920s England, Owen James is sent to a medical facility whose staff claim experimental procedures can cure homosexuality. He is placed under Nurse Dorothy, whose daily teatime sessions with him are meant to steer him toward a heterosexual life, and the two find common ground over her brother's death in the war. She later brings him a typewriter so he can finish his novel. In the past, Owen shares a cottage with Philip, a medical student. The two are lovers, though Philip wants the new testicular transplant operation he believes will cure him. An older man with no family arrives at the cottage claiming he once lived there, and Philip presses Owen to use him for the procedure.
