Plot summary
Abel Trelawny, a noted Egyptologist, receives a package holding half a plaque in hieroglyphics; joined to its matching piece, the inscription calls on ancient powers to restore life. Trelawny refuses to take part, and he is found in his study in a coma with claw marks on his wrist. By his dictated wishes he is kept among his Egyptian artifacts with two people watching him at all times. His daughter Margaret calls on art historian Robert Wyatt, her former boyfriend, who brings in Corbeck, an archaeologist who dug an Egyptian queen's tomb with Trelawny in the 1970s. Their search turns on an ancient mummy whose heart carries a power beyond this world.
