Plot summary
Meyer Lansky, an aging boss of organized crime, travels from one country to the next in search of a place that will let him stay, while the United States seeks his extradition. He thinks back to his grandfather, who refused to flee when the family left their shtetl for America, and to the Lower East Side, where he loses the challah money his mother gave him in a street craps game. He returns to the corner with his friend Benjamin Siegel and refuses to be cheated. Running his own games as a young man, he meets Charles "Lucky" Luciano, takes a beating rather than pay protection, and earns Luciano's respect. Bootlegging brings the two friends into the circle of the gangster Arnold Rothstein.
