Plot summary
Seafield is an eccentric alcoholic sea captain whose father died at the hands of a monster in Lake Michigan. He recruits a crew of specialists to hunt the creature down: the weapons expert Sean Shaughnessy, the sonar operator Nedge Pepsi and Dick Flynn, once an officer in the United States Navy. They all travel with him to Lighthouse Island, where he means to kill the monster. Their first two attempts do not work. On the second, the creature attacks Dick, who comes away alive. The group then meets with Seafield's brother Ashcroft to think over a fresh approach to the hunt.

- Ryland Brickson Cole Tews paid for most of Lake Michigan Monster's roughly $7,000 budget with money from his side job delivering pizzas.
- The underwater sequences were the hardest part of the low-budget shoot: camera operators had so little oxygen they could only film briefly before surfacing for air.
- The film started out as the idea of a mermaid, but early in development the mermaid was swapped for a lake monster because the filmmakers thought that was technically easier to pull off.
- Its low-resolution look came from shooting on an old DSLR camera owned by Tews' girlfriend, the actress Beulah Peters, after the decision was made early on to shoot the film in black and white.
