Plot summary
Private investigator Tony Rome is hunting a Spanish galleon that went down off Miami in 1591 when he comes across the body of a woman on the ocean floor, her feet locked in a block of cement. He reports it to Lieutenant Dave Santini and thinks no more about it. Then Waldo Gronsky, newly out of prison, asks Rome to find Sondra Lomax, the woman whose identification of him put him there, and lets Rome pawn his watch to cover the fee. Rome checks the local nightspots and hears that Lomax had been expected at a party hosted by Kit Forrest. Questioning Forrest brings the anger of racketeer Al Mungar, who looks after Kit's interests and warns Rome away.
