Plot summary
Gifford Williams and Nolan Edwards play in a combo called The Jammin' Pajama Men at their school, Castle High. It is 1947, big band swing is at its height, and the two friends want to turn the group into a full swing band. Their teacher Herb Miller agrees to lead it, more players join, and the band takes the name The Knights of Swing. A girls' vocal trio, the 3B's, sings with them. By the end of the school year the members hope to be strong enough to take first place at the California Battle of the Bands. A parent, Melba Barlutski, works against them, and the obstacles the students meet carry racial overtones. Lou Arthur, the school principal and a former jazz pianist, backs the band as its members keep playing.
