Plot summary
Armand Degas works as a killer and goes by the name Blackbird. On one job he accidentally shoots his own younger brother. Years afterward a Mafia boss hires him to shoot the boss's father-in-law at a hotel, and he kills a woman there as well; the boss, who liked her, refuses to pay him. Blackbird meets Richie Nix, a young criminal who acts on impulse, and joins Richie's plan to squeeze money out of Nelson Davies, the man Carmen Colson works for. Carmen's husband Wayne, an ironworker who has just lost his job, lives apart from her. He comes to her office looking for work, is taken for Davies, and fights the two men off, throwing Richie through a window. He and Carmen both see Blackbird's face before he gets away.

- Diane Lane, Thomas Jane and Mickey Rourke were cast in the leads, but Sandra Bullock was originally considered for the role Lane took, and John Travolta, Viggo Mortensen and Justin Timberlake were reported to have been up for the parts taken by Rourke, Jane and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
- Test screenings found the plot too confusing, so scenes involving Cape Girardeau and a subplot with Johnny Knoxville as a deputy were edited out of the film.
