Plot summary
Telly, sixteen, and his best friend Casper drift through a day in New York City with no adults in sight. Telly talks Casper through his latest encounter with a twelve-year-old virgin, then the two shoplift malt liquor and peaches, visit a friend's apartment to watch skateboarding videos and boast about sex. Across the city, a group of girls talk about the same subject. Ruby's test for sexually transmitted diseases comes back negative; Jennie's comes back positive, and she tells a nurse that her only partner was Telly. She goes looking for him. Telly and Casper steal money from Telly's mother, buy marijuana from a Rastafarian dealer and meet up with their friends.

- Harvey and Bob Weinstein, Miramax's co-chairmen, had to buy Kids back from Disney and set up a one-off company, Shining Excalibur Films, to release it, because Disney policy at the time barred NC-17 films and the MPAA refused to lower the rating to R.
- Chloë Sevigny was first cast in a small role as one of the girls at the swimming pool, and took over the lead as Jennie only after Mia Kirshner, the original actress, was judged not the right fit to act opposite first-time performers.
- Most of the teenagers in Kids signed contracts without knowledge of their rights and were left on their own once filming ended.
- Larry Clark wanted Leo Fitzpatrick, who plays Telly, in a film after watching him skateboard in New York and curse whenever he failed to land a trick; neither Fitzpatrick nor Justin Pierce had acted before.
- Harmony Korine said Kids was almost entirely scripted, despite what many viewers assumed; the only improvised scene was Justin Pierce's Casper on the couch at the end.
