Plot summary
Haru, in the fifth grade, shares her tastes with Yuko, her mother's younger sister, and can say what she truly feels to her. Her father Takashi is free-spirited, scruffy, poor and unemployed. Kyoko, her dependable mother, gave up on him, and the two live apart. The summer break has only begun when Takashi takes Haru away. She has no strong feelings either way about her good-for-nothing father, yet the outing appeals to her because he will bring her to the places she likes. Takashi appears to have struck a deal with her mother, with Haru held as a hostage, and she knows none of the details.
