Plot summary
Kayo Nogami, known as Kabei, lives in Tokyo with her husband Shigeru, an academic, and their two daughters. In 1940 the authorities arrest Shigeru and accuse him of being a Communist, and the family's peaceful life ends. With her husband imprisoned, Kayo works from morning to night to keep the household running and bring up the girls, helped by Shigeru's sister Hisako and his former student Yamazaki. World War II then casts its shadow over the whole country, and daily life grows harder, but Kayo tries to hold on to her cheerful determination and to keep the family together with her love.
