Plot summary
Kate, who is fourteen, hides in a bathroom while Demesta bangs on the door and asks about a drug deal he says she ruined. She leaves through the window with just a towel on and drops it while running down a hillside staircase. Bill, a retired vaudeville performer living by himself, opens the trunk of his car after shopping and sees the girl lying there, partly covered by a deflated inner tube. He tells the bag boy that it was a trick, drives off, and later, on a quiet street, agrees to let her stay at his house.
