Plot summary
At American High, Michael Peck is a baby-faced 104-pound sophomore whose teachers treat him as an idiot and whose classmates treat him as a geek. His parents plan family time ahead and hand him contracts to sign about his extracurricular activities. He wants the wrestling team, but after he is booted from band, they draw up an agreement committing him to the Science Club. Skipping school with his friend Geiger, Peck meets two seniors, Emily and Becca, who are also skipping. Emily singles him out, and a tentative relationship begins between them, though she is far more savvy than he is. His classes and his time with her give him ideas for the science fair project he has been pushed into.
