Oskar Werner
Biography
Oskar Werner was an Austrian actor who worked on stage and in film and won international fame. Born in Vienna, he joined the Burgtheater at 18 and made his stage debut in 1941, and he later acted in character roles at other Vienna theaters. His first film came in 1948, and he went to Hollywood for the lead in the war drama Decision Before Dawn (1951). After a break from the screen he appeared in Lola Montès (1955), and Jules and Jim (1962) brought him wider critical notice. In 1965 he played Dr. Schumann in Ship of Fools, earning the New York Film Critics Circle Award and an Oscar nomination, and Fiedler in The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, which won him a Golden Globe. Later films included Fahrenheit 451 (1966), The Shoes of the Fisherman (1968) and Voyage of the Damned (1976), his last screen role. He died in 1984.
