Plot summary
Brad Cairn and his wife Abby have two children and live in New York. Their firstborn is nine-year-old Joshua, a piano prodigy whose manner is that of an adult. With the birth of his sister Lily, Joshua pulls away from his parents and gravitates to his uncle Ned. Lily's crying wears on Abby, and Brad, busy at his job, cannot steady his wife or keep pace with his son. Hazel, Joshua's grandmother on his father's side, is an Evangelical Christian who speaks to him about her faith. Abby, who is Jewish and not observant, objects.
