Plot summary
B.J. is graduating high school and his friends at his private school laugh off the idea of Morehouse College, where he has been accepted, and talk him into a road trip to tour Pepperdine in California. His father Brian goes to his aunt Madea for help, and she proposes that Joe, her brother, take B.J. on the drive. Joe has his own strict ideas about raising a boy, and Brian, though reluctant, agrees and convinces his son to go along. The two set out for California in Ruby, Joe's Buick convertible, after throwing away most of B.J.'s belongings. They stop first in Tennessee on Beale Street, where Joe meets an old friend, Geraldine, and they spend the night in a motel.
